The Unschooling life of Barney & Hebe

Totaly Turtle Batik

I wanted to do batik with the kids but thought the hot wax would be too dangerous ,and after the wax on the kitchen table from the wax crayon project I definitely thought it was a bad idea!!! I stumbled across an easy batik project on pinterest using pva glue instead of the wax and thought it looked great!!! here is our attempted turtle batik t shirts.

We drew our designs -turtles for our Bali sea turtle project - onto tracing paper with a heavy pencil line.

Next we taped our designs pencil side down to our plain white t shirts . Using the blunt end of the pencil we rubbed over the pencil lines to transfer the markings to the t-shits .

Once we had our design transferred to the t-shirt we went over the lines using pva glue, this was really tricky and the lovely intricate designs were not easy to follow. Some of the glue has spread....Fingers crossed it works out ok!

We left our t-shirts to dry over night and this morning soaked them in a nice warm/hot bath! The glue started to melt away and some of the paint flaked off .

The glue started to melt away and some of the paint flaked off .You can rub the t-shirts or even use a nail brush to really scrub the glue off! The paint doesnt come off or spread, just a few flakes from where it was on the glue thats all!

The design starts to quickly show through!!
